Today it seems you can’t turn on the TV or the radio without hearing about the dyer state of the new American youth. Time magazine in 2012 called us the “Generation of Me”. The article went on to say we were the most self absorbed, narcissistic and uncaring generation in American history, but the article also elaborated that our generation would be the one that saved the world. The millennials are a massive generation filled not only with narcissism, but with good intentions and a strong sense of citizenship. When you match our generation’s tendency to be hopeful with our availability and utilization of technology, you have a perfect storm for a new and better era of social justice and political equality not just in America but globally. In the 2014 midterm elections only 36 percent of all registered voters voted; that’s the lowest voter turnout rate in 72 years according fairvote.org. Political scientist studying these trends among voters over the past two decades have discovered that, not only young people in America, but the middle aged as well have lost an interest in politics. In today’s generation of being instantly satisfied with the latest phone, song, drive through meal, or celebrity couple many Americans are finding it hard to follow along with a piece of legislation that takes months to move its way through the three branches of government. It is a myth that today’s youth are stupid. The truth is that today’s youth are disinterested, and that’s where organizations like the NAACP can help. The point he strived to make through out his book about the politics of the Internet is that we as a society have become more progressive because technology hasgiven every one of us a platform to be vocal. Black Lives Matter, Arab Spring, and the Egyptian Revolution are all powerful political movements started by youth online. Movements are no longer boxed in by geographical area, now everyone can join in the fight whether they are in Alabama or
