In Engaging Apolitical Youth by Melissa Ames the idea that young readers today are becoming more involved with how our country is being run and what the leaders are saying is a prominent theme throughout this article. I believe that Ames if using a lot of facts and it seems as if she has done extensive research into all of these topics. I believe that Ames is backing up her statements with many different sources and references. Ames is clearly saying that there is a direct correlation between dystopian novels and the amount of your adults interested and involved with politics in the modern world. Ames shows this by bringing up that “total vote has increased consistently throughout the past four presidential elections: 2000, 14.3%; 2004, 16.0%;
His youth made it easier for him to tap into the growing population of young people getting involved in politics to voice their dissatisfaction with the nation’s current state:
They extend Fournier’s argument by raising awareness and offering a solution to how Millennials will win against the Washington elite. They illustrate that independent voters can unify around political center. Their purpose is to raise awareness about the potential for millennials to radically change Washington by identifying the common millennial positions on key issues. Cahn and Cahn establish a confident semi-formal illustrated tone for a non-millennial aged audience. Cahn and Cahn want readers to think about how millennials can reshape
If the population do their civic duty and are active in political campaigns the results could reflect this political opinion. If more people were focused on being active voter like people over 65, the gap between who votes and who does not is quite substantial, “There was a 34-percentage point difference in 2008 between how 18-to-29-year-olds voted and how 65-and-overs voted” (Paul Taylor). If younger voters become more involved in politics like the 65 and older are; the officials voted into office would reflect younger voter’s opinions as well. Before becoming involved in politics voters must be educated and interested so they do not fall into the political consultant’s
Being a fast food worker for the past year and a half, I have been exposed to numerous different types of people, and most of them are not the same race as me. When I first started to get to know them, even though at times there was difficulty communicating, we were able to make it work and build stronger relationships. One of my favorite managers was Rose, a Hispanic woman who had been so kind to me. She was an example of someone who was able to teach me things about herself I could have stereotyped and not taken the time to learn anything about her as an individual. Growing up in Joliet, Illinois has always given me the opportunity to experience race relations on a regular basis, just due to the diversity of the city that I live in.
When most races hear the words African American, negative thoughts rush to their brains. But why? Africans Americans have been perceived as negative characters to other races for decades. Individuals often forget large amount of blacks have been successful in life and still are accomplishing many things. Today, we live in a world where the bad outweighs the good. Because of this, many individuals of different races lack the knowledge that many blacks are actually achievers instead of failures.
Defining Civic Engagement “In recent years, a chorus of critics and educators has expressed alarm about the disengagement of young people generally from politics and public affairs in the United States” (Boyte). Perhaps because civic engagement has become synonymous with a run for Senate. Perhaps because we are trying to measure the comprehension of political affairs in the minds of children. Or maybe we overlook the fact that in confining civic engagement to that which consists of voter participation and all things electoral in nature, we isolate a large and important audience. When I think of civic engagement I think of a reform in mindset, rather than an actual reform in law.
Some students say that they believe that little will change in the country, no matter who becomes president. Young adults are still trying to get used to being on their own, and not as reliant on their parents. They don’t know where to start or even how to
Autonomous vehicles will likely change a lot of aspects in the daily life of many in the not so distant future. About 94 percent of accidents are caused by human error. (NHTSA, 2015) These vehicles will have plethora of effects from daily commutes to work and road trips, to other things like an end to drinking and driving or old people driving, in turn creating a safer roadway and dramatically reducing accidents. An autonomous vehicle is a driverless vehicle that can navigate roadways using high tech sensors, cameras and other advanced programs, and based on the information gathered, it can react to its surroundings.
Some could even say they are more politically engaged than some of their elders who have not grown up with social media like they have. The teens of Australia deserve to have their voice heard when such important decisions are being made about their country’s
I am not saying that there aren 't any young adults with these types of stereotypes but not all of the young adults have these stereotypes. Also I oppose
When I was growing up I never really thought much of politics. A reason for that was probably because my parents never really talked about it and that I was homeschooled for most of my life. The only conversations really had about politics were with my older brother with the topic being on how much politics sucked. I would really be only interested about politics when the presidential elections would be going on, and that’s only to see who’s going to win. Although my thoughts and involvement about politics haven’t really changed much, my interest in the presidential election has risen slightly to the point where I’m more informed on what policies the candidates are pushing for.
Food Revolution “We are what we eat”. This statement became true because today the health of the American people is being negatively affected by the fast food industry. Though fast food may offer convenience to busy Americans this convenience should not come at the cost of their health. Due to their high concentration of fats, sugars and addictive substances fast foods can potentially cause a variety of health problems: Obesity, heart disease, diabetes and even other types of illnesses caused by meat. A recent study done on lab rats revealed that the brain response to fast food is almost exactly like that of an addict to heroin.
I agree with Rick Shenkman’s opinion about ignorant voters nowadays. Even though our generations receive more education than people did in the past, those knowledge only lasts until the end of an exam or quiz. For students, most of them couldn’t care less about subjects or matters that are not included in their future careers or majors. As the generation is falling deeper into an endless hole of ignorance, they realize they also have to perform the duties of an American citizen, voting. They rush through news and articles, rely on others’ comments to formulate their own opinions without having a strong foundation on political parties and ideologies; thus making false accusations and decisions.
Personally, my family, my age, the media, and my education is what has been the most influential when it comes comes to political socialization. My families views on on government are extremely different on both sides because they are both unwilling to listen to the opposing argument. This has to do with mass media, the mirroring of public opinions on certain people that shape their opinion. My age has affected my views because of the the things that have been going on around me, for example the parkland shooting was not a personal experience but it could happen to anyone. I believe that it is sad that no one has taken legislative action which leads me to have a mistrust in the branches and how they function.
