The turmoil, upheaval, and controversy of the 2016 Trump election is a significant current event of the modern world, but this landslide election is not the first in America’s history to raise such conflicting opinions. The Revolution of 1800 was another shift in political history that impacted not only the candidates, but majority of the public. The defeat of John Adams to Vice President Thomas Jefferson led to the rise of the Democratic-Republican Party rule and the eventual demise of the Federalist Party. Often in politics, opposing views, scandals, and negative publicity plays a role in the election process, due to this, in both the 2016 election and 1800 election negative criticism from both parties was evident. The 1800 and 2016 elections
The presidential election of 1800 presented strong candidates on both side, each uniquely qualified for the position and prepared to lead the United States in very different ways. The Federalists and the Democratic-Republicans both possessed strong campaigns with good arguments to sway voters to their side, however, almost every positive campaigning tactic meant to promote their party’s candidate was met with slandering of some kind from the other side. The dilemma of every voter at the time was to choose between a strong government to protect them, or choose to protect themselves. This was the dilemma of Timothy Tisdale. As said by Joanne Freeman, author of a published article on the election, “The presidential election of 1800 was an angry,
The United States Presidential election that took place in the year 2000 was between George Bush and Al Gore. The vote was very close and it ended up all coming down to Florida. Once the votes were counted and it was revealed that Bush had won, Gore wanted a recount of the votes. The matter was taken to the Florida supreme court and Gore ended up winning the case.
Prior to this class, I was unaware of the knowledge on websites, media, and further informational outlets to aid me in researching political events, interest groups and legislation, and thus providing me a more well rounded viewpoint. In the year 1800, America was still a new, inexperienced nation. The many faults in the political system were still being ironed out, and the introduction and implementation of these new processes were stirring great interest in the people. The Presidential elections were one of the biggest changes that the Constitution had brought about in its ratification. The elections gave the people a chance to have their voices heard and to express their opinions in whom they believed should lead their country, without giving them a dangerous or excess amount of power. Politics has been a big part in my life ever since I can remember, especially growing up with a father and grandfather who were once state representatives. Thus I thought I would investigate what my peers thought about this upcoming presidential election. I was curious to hear about if they were knowledgeable on the candidates, if they were planning on voting, and who or what influenced their vote. As I furthered my research, I came across several similarities focusing on college students and if they had enough knowledge to vote in the president election as well as who influenced my peers votes.
All I can do is recall how elections went my freshman year. My shoes were still peep toes, my clothes were just as tight fitting, my hair was still imperfect, but my motives were different. Freshman year I ran because my friend was too shy to go through the process alone, but now I ran for something greater. I ran because I truly believed I was the best candidate for the position, because I loved to meet new people and represent them, and because I wanted to get involved. After I delivered my speech, I had to wait another four hours to hear the results, so I started reflecting over the work I did: the speech that took five hours to write and practice, the buttons that took half a day to make, the hair that took a whole day to straighten, the mental stress that took place for a full two weeks!
Coming into an introduction to politics class, I thought to myself I knew exactly where my political views were on the scale. As the first two weeks of class went on, there was a constant questioning if my political views were still the same. The only way to find this out was by taking a quiz online at politicalcompass.org. After taking this quiz, it would hopefully give the results I had been hoping for.
Introduction In today’s political world, there is a large part of the population who votes in elections marred with electoral fraud and malpractice. These people suffer the consequences of having non-representative governments where the government does not reflect the votes and will of the people. One would think a country devoid of fraud during the electoral process would remove previously cheating and poorly performing incumbents, resulting in better functioning governments, which is untrue. Removing electoral fraud from an election does not guarantee that the previously fraudulent or poor performing incumbents will be removed from office.
