Human beings share the earth in the same way they share their ideas and memories through literature. The stories we read, write, and create are the air we breath, connecting everyone and everything. The greens and blues that make up our planet are a constant in writing, they are the earth colors that symbolizes growth, harmony, and endurance; all of the things that make characters round and memorable. These examples in literature, being the connection between everyone on the planet, and the planet itself, can be found in any piece of literature from any time period. Many know that the dictionary is a representation of time through words and this idea is used in the story 1984. “In Oldspeak it’s called, quite frankly, ‘reality control.’ In Newspeak it is called doublethink, although doublethink comprises much else as well. (Orwell, George. 1984 pg. 214)” By having a shared language that is constantly changing, the ideas of the people living in this fictional world are shown. Their reality is being controlled, words are changing to mean phrases completely different than once believed, and the people are accepting all of these transformations within their society. In Animal Farm animals are used to show the connections between political leaders, common people, and scapegoats. In the novel, a song is used to keep the community collected, it’s said that “Above all, the tune and even the words of ‘Beasts of England’ were known everywhere. It had spread with astonishing speed. (Orwell, George. Animal Farm pg. 56)” Like oxygen, the song has spread through everyone and connects every farm animal, filling them with new ideas and plans.
