The book 1776 of David McCullough is very interesting history book. It took you back to the most relevant history time of American history of 1776. The book captures your attention with well-written narrative and format. In 1788, fifty six year old George Washington, was chosen to be the first president of the United States of America. Washington never really ran for president. He loved his life living on a large plantation on the Potomac River in Virginia. America loved him, he was the most popular man in the U.S. After the war, Washington was really home sick and just wanted to stay home, but America had other plans for him. When the votes were tallied Washington got all sixty nine votes, which made him president.
For two terms, George Washington was the president of America. As the first president, Washington had to set the standards for what future presidents should do. George Washington grew up in Fredericksburg, Virginia where his first job was a land surveyor. As a young kid, Washington never thought of himself being the president one day. At the first presidential election in 1789, Washington ran against John adams.

He was one with the most accomplishments, foreign policies and impacted the union the most after his presidency. Being in charge of a nation is never easy no matter how much experience or prepared one is, issues are always going to arise whether it be political, economic,or social issues.
George Washington completely shows the heroic traits of bravery, cleverness, and determination by leading his men similar to Odysseus in Homer’s The Odyssey. First, Washington has the trait of bravery when he led his troops and he stood in the front towards the oncoming enemies. This trait is similar to Odysseus because he took risks to achieve his goal. For example, Odysseus also has the trait of bravery when he reasoned with the Cyclops and when he stood armed on his ship during the encounter with Scylla.

In order to avoid troubles, Washington was granted for a commission by Britain in the Seven Years' War.
