George Washington was undoubtedly a great man, admired widely in his own time and ever after for intelligence, bravery, and kindness, it would be hard to tell from his portraits. This is because Washington was a lifelong victim of oral health issues that left him with only one of his original teeth intact when he took office and caused discomfort and embarrassment that kept him from speaking in public. Experiencing chronic pain is not merely unpleasant, but can actually have a longterm negative impact on mental health.
