When choosing what one barrier at Georgian College it was the most challenging, it took a lot of looking back on my own experience here at the college. While suffer from severe anxiety it was easy to find a major dilemma that is faced at the school. It’s believed that not having a safe and quiet place to go when feeling overwhelmed has created a large over looked problem among many students suffer from anxiety, depression, and panic attacks. This is definitely a major issue for a lot of students that isn’t address enough. No matter where you go with 21,000 students every room is always crowded loud and busy. Well they have definitely stepped up on the mental health issues making people feel more comfortable admitting when they need help there is so much more the college can do. The first thing that should be addressed is the number of councillors to student ratio. There is 21,000 plus students attending Georgian College each semester and only a minimal amount of counsellors, that makes for very long waits for students in need. Yes, there’s definitely more than enough teachers to help out however teachers aren’t trained the way councillors are. The two ways this could be fixed is adding it into the budget to hire more councillors and also to have teachers trained to deal with crises issues. Sometime you feel comfortable with a teacher however they direct you to a councillor who you’ve never met or dealt with its very intimidating. Imagine going to the same doctor for 10 years and all of a sudden you are forced to see a new doctor because yours isn’t trained to deal with the cold you have. You must then tell your new doctor everything about your health history and what is going on, you completely open up to someone and then you’re told they will no longer help you. On top of the stress students already deal with, being told from someone they trust that they must re-open themselves up to a new person would push many students with anxiety away from even attempting to seek help. Also, there should be way more quite areas in the school. The only time you can go to the library and have it be “quiet” is early in the morning or late at night. For many students that isn’t a practical time to be in the library. Sometimes an anxiety attack can occur at the absolute worst times and without somewhere to go to compose yourself its extremely hard to make it through the day, you just want to be back home in your safe place.
