I do not believe that Theodore Roosevelt was anti-business; rather he opposed their unethical practices. During this time big corporations set rates that were too high, underpaid their employees, and made employees work long hours. The Interstate Commerce Commission was established in 1887 by Grover Cleveland to investigate railroad rates and rebates. President Roosevelt introduced the Hepburn act to give the ICC the right to set rates for railroad shipping. By doing this railroads and big business were unable to set their rates too high because it no longer offered rebates.
Last of all, debates in the past have also helped us determine the next president because of how the candidate acts during the debates and how they respond to the questions. ’’During the second debate between President Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter … Ford botched a line about Soviet influence in Eastern Europe. “There is no Soviet domination of Eastern Europe,” said Ford … Ford’s answer was at complete odds with the reality of the Cold War.

Jimmy Carter emphasized five specific points that supported his position that America’s prosperity could not be the only condition to base foreign policy decisions on. The first point being made was about setting foreign policy and that America had to put human rights in the forefront of policy decisions. Carter then continued to explain that it was imperative that the democratic countries of the world unite for economic strength by improving the worldwide monetary system, and to examine ways to increase free trade. The third point that he made targeted the arms race with the Soviet Union. He believed that it was a dangerous situation abd wrong on a moral level.
The events of the pre cold war era, Roosevelt helped to set up Office of Civilian Defense in 1941 It helped to shape the ideas of defense plans and national preparedness. His idea was more of local and state governments to create their own type of local defense councils. But the idea of national preparedness set the way for other Presidents to set up defense plans. Truman set up a plan in 1946, in fear of bombing and used a defense plan as well to help civilians with evacuation plans. But many people believed at this time that defense she be done in the local level, not using government sources.

The theory is that leaders strive for peace while also keeping other nations aware of its military power.
