Geronimo was a Native American legend who fought off the Mexicans and the Americans for decades until he surrendered in 1886.

Geronimo was born in June, 1929, in No-Doyohn Canyon, Mexico. He and his parents belonged to the Apache, the smallest band of the Chiricahua Tribe. He was good hunter since the beginning and story says that Geronimo swallowed the heart of his first kill to ensure a life of success on the chase. The Chiricahua Tribe also raided Mexicans often. When Geronimo was 17, he was a successful raider. The Mexican Government responded by putting a price on Apache scalps. This did not deter Geronimo.

Geronimo was a legend because he survived many battles, when he surrendered, he also published an autobiography.

On the other hand, the Apache saw him as a holdout who put people’s lives in danger. Soon after the deaths, Geronimo rounded up over 200 men to fight. In the 1850’s, he had a new enemy. After the Mexican-American War, the Americans took parts of territory from Mexico and Apache land. Soon, people found gold in Apache land. The Apaches had to step up their attacks which included brutal ambushes on stagecoaches and wagon trains. Eventually, the Apache leader, Geronimo’s father-in-law, Cochise, put a halt to the war and his people were sent to a reservation on Apache territory. Within a few years, Cochise died and the Government broke the treaty and the people were sent North. Geronimo didn’t go with them but authorities caught him and sent him to a different reservation in 1877. He escaped four years later. Over the next five years, Geronimo and a group of Native Americans fought in the last of the Indian Wars. At one point one fourth of the army was trying to hunt him down. He finally surrendered in the summer of 1886. He then spent 27 years as a prisoner of war. During those years, Geronimo became a celebrity of some sort. Crowds followed him, hoping to catch a glimpse of him. In 1905, published an autobiography. Finally, in 1909, geronimo died after he was thrown off his horse. His nephew found him soon after.
