Throughout United States history, success has been achieved through the exploitation of the lower class by the more dominant higher class. The lower class is used as cheap labor force, working terrible conditions which can comprise of dangerous substance exposure and the potential to lose limbs or even ones’ life. Immigrants are usually thrown in this situation due to lack of money and a language barrier. Commonly, like in Federico’s ghost, immigrants are put to work doing farm work, which is comprised of back breaking work and long hours in the beating sun. The Ghost map was a well put together book that shed light on a past problem that has changed many things about the way we live our lives today. Without the contributions of John Snow and Edwin Chadwik it might have taken many more years to figure out how this epidemic was spreading. In addition, many more people would have died. Because I am a very visual person the hardest part of reading The Ghost Map was while reading it, I visualized how it may have looked and smelled in London during this time period and it was not very pleasant. There were a few times I had to put the book down for a while and think about trees and birds to get the idea of London in the 1800’s out of my head.

The novel, Turn of the Screw, by Henry James takes place in England and is told from the point of view of the Governess, whose sanity is questionable. The Governess is insane because throughout the novel, she is the only one who sees the ghosts, she is in love with the master, and she allows her desire to protect the children to drive her to insanity. First, the Governess is insane because she is the only character in the novel to ever have seen the ghosts. Early in the novel, the Governess claims she sees the ghost of Peter Quint, and immediately tells Mrs. Grose.
To be completely honest, at first, I had to click through each discussion forum to recall which stories I’ve read and which I haven’t. I came across the interesting titles of each story, and then remembered that it was exactly that what prompted me to continue reading them. The purpose of a ghost story is to leave the reader feeling frightened and unaware of what the truth of reality is. Nguyen's Black-Eyed Women flips all our perceptions of what a ghost is and why they visit the living. The ghost stories told in this story affect the narrator by forcing her to confront the discomfort of her reality. The narrator realizes she has been ignoring discomfort about her brother dying for her, and s the guilt and that she lived. She loses her identify, and sense of security, however her brother's ghost arrives to mend this disconnect.
