Over the years, many people have achieved greatness in some form. Whether it is inventing things for the good of mankind, helping the poor, or championing the rights of the mentally ill; many people have made a difference in the world. Others have achieved greatness in strange ways, for example, the few who have achieved posthumous honor. Some examples of people who have worked for the greater good are Dorothea Dix, who was a champion for the rights of the mentally ill; Thomas Edison, who produced hundreds of machines for the good of mankind; and Thurgood Marshall, who fought to end segregation in universities across America. These people all strived to make a difference in the lives of not only the people close to them, but the entire world.

These people are soldiers. Those who serve our country always have, and always will stand as role model for me. The way that they are able to risk their lives shows a bravely that I can only hope to one day have. When you are watching the news and you hear about the soldiers who throw themselves over grenades, you realize how much bravery that soldiers must have.
The first reason why I should be in National Junior Honor Society is because of my leadership skills. The first example of my leadership skills are applied to my youth group in the Cecilton Parish. I am the treasurer and help with the Ideas for fundraising. We, as a group held a spaghetti dinner for the church and I managed the money and the setting. Pursuing this further, I actively show leadership in school.
It is an extraordinary honor to be considered as a candidate for the National Honor Society. Being considered means I have achieved my goal in demonstrating my determination- in school and outside of school- and my willingness to aid people in my community. Being a part of such a prestigious organization is an enormous responsibility to which I will fully devote my time. Ever since I was a freshman, my goal was to work diligently to be among the highest scholars and to be accepted into this scholarly “hall of fame”. Through my relentless hard work and perseverance, I believe that I possess the four characteristics of a National Honor Society member- leadership, service, character, and scholarship.

While completing this award it helped me learn the importance of teamwork and what will happen if the team does not pull together. One team member lost motivation and therefore would not help with the map reading and we all got lost. Once the team motivated that individual everything started to run smoothly. When working in a health and social care environment I think it is extremely important to work together as a team. These experiences have helped me improve my communication skills and have showed me the importance of working within a team.

There is an old saying by Edmund Burke is that the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. This is true however in both of the cases of heroism and valor in the face of evil and danger good men did something. In Umpqua a 10-year Army veteran stalled a crazed gunman from getting into classrooms immediately and doing what he planned to do. This shows that when evil rises to cause damage to innocence a few good men will rise to stop evil no matter the cost. Chris Mintz allowed a multitude of innocent civilians time to run to safety at the expense of his own.
