2015 was the hottest year on record globally, with the estimated global mean temperature for 2015 is 0.73oC above the 1961-1990 average and it is predicted that 2016 will be hottest year on record. As a representing youth delegate for Australia, I have come to talk about what it means to be a global citizen. A global citizen is someone that contributes in emerging and building world community’s values and practices. One’s own initiative is recognising that global warming is a major issue that, we, the current and the future generations of global citizens have to face today. If we fail to change our current ways, more extreme weathers events will happen more frequently globally. These climate related disasters may require extensive repair of infrastructure, and as a result of our actions, these extreme weather events increase the likelihood of mass migration of ‘climate refugees’- people who are forced to leave their homes of drought, flooding or other climate-related disasters. In 2015, in Northern Chile one of the driest places was flooded in less than 24 hours with 9 casualties, many people had to evacuate and leave their homes behind. In Australia, heavy rainfall in Queensland in 2010-2011 resulted in extensive flooding, impacting more than 78% of the state and over 2.5 million people, and 33 casualties.
