Global warming is expected to have far-reaching, long-lasting and, in numerous cases, devastating, detrimental consequences for our planet. For many years, global warming, defined as the gradual heating of Earth's surface, oceans and atmosphere, was a topic of heated debate in the scientific community. Despite the fact that it has been proven that global warming has been occurring for multiple years now, it still may be asked whether the effects of global warming are really that extensive. Unfortunately, the answer is yes. Even the slightest average temperature rise is enough to result in a dramatic transformation of our planet. A warmer climate fabricates an atmosphere that can gather as well as retain and release more water, resulting in the altercation of weather patterns in a manner that causes wet areas to become even wetter and dry areas to become drier. "Extreme weather events are costing more and more," proclaims Aliya Haq, deputy director of NRDC's Clean Power Plan initiative. "The number of billion-dollar weather disasters is expected to rise." Endeavoring to repair effects that resulted from such drastic weather patterns will continue to increase drastically due to global warming, taking a toll on our economy. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, in 2015 there were a total of ten destructive weather and climate events in the United States that caused at least $1 billion worth of losses. Global climate change has had a tendency to impact children, the elderly, low-income communities, and minorities the most as well as in a variation of direct and indirect manners. Alongside the the increase in temperature, the incidence of illness, emergency room visits, and death also thickens in amount. "There are more hot days in places where people aren't used to it," Haq states. "They don't have air-conditioning or can't afford it. One or two days isn't a big deal. But four days straight where temperatures don't go down, even at night, leads to severe health consequences." In America, hundreds of heat-related deaths occur annually because of the direct and indirect effects of heat-exacerbated, life-threatening illnesses like heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and cardiovascular and kidney diseases.
