In the reading, “Whose City Is It? Globalization and the Formation of New Claims,” Saskia Sassen discusses the transformation of city dynamics where the way people are linked and occupy spaces has changed due to globalization. Moreover, stating that as cities globalize the interaction and connection with the larger community as a singular notion of national identity transforms to one of a transnational global community where connections are able to be made not just within a singular community but with other world cities. The first change due to globalization is outsourcing or job dislocation which is essentially where jobs are outsourced from one country to another primarily because of lower labor costs. The second change due to globalization is increased cultural diversity within the workplace as due to immigration and continuous border crossings globalization allows for an increasing variety of people from all walks of life coming into the workforce. Thus, world companies have to now learn to deal with their changing diverse workplace by adopting new guidelines for their employees that promote harmonious interactions. The third change due to globalization is employee training as with the influx of culturally diverse individuals with various backgrounds, religions and ethnicities in the workplace companies have the responsibility to protect their employees from discrimination. So the employee training is where employees are offered training and guidelines that essentially discuss the appreciation of other cultures and perspectives as a way to develop a more inclusive, culturally diverse work environment.
