Genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, play a major role in our society whether we realize it or not. The controversy of whether or not we should be using GMOs steadily increases due to new information becoming available along with new research being conducted., Benefits of GMOs including the decrease use of pesticides, food production, and creating food are topics that will help explain the reason why GMOs should be used. These topics will include proven facts along with actual results that back up these benefits. On the other side of the controversy lies the reasons we should not be using GMOs. Research and facts will outline the reasons including health issues that have risen from GMOs along with the side effects caused by GMOs. This …show more content…
In 1996, GMOs were introduced to farmers with the top selling point being that these new crop varieties would reduce the use of pesticides (Ganzel, 2009). Genetic engineering made crops containing certain genes that did the job of certain herbicides and pesticides reducing the need for most pesticides and herbicides (Ganzel, 2009According to (2017), “the adoption of GE crops resulted in pesticide use reduction of 46.4 million pounds in 2003. Globally GE crops have reduced pesticide spraying (1996—2011) by 9%, or 975 million pounds.” ). This benefit of pesticide reduction has since continued extending the benefits of GMOs to the environment. Through pesticide reduction, less water is needed decreasing our environmental footprint …show more content…
The great thing about GMOs lies in the ability to produce a lot of food especially in a time where the world needs it the most. However through the process of producing these high yields of food, one must wonder at what cost? Throughout researching GMOs, I realized just how much we rely on GMOs without even realizing it. On the flipside, the findings on how just how harmful they can be is alarming. My findings overall is that everyone will lean either one way or the other, but I do not believe this is topic that can have a distinct wrong and right. This is because GMOs are so tightly intertwined in so many aspects of our lives. The only way to know what side to choose is by simply looking at the facts and forming an opinion from
