What do you get when you combine The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet with gnomes and make it family-friendly? Gnomeo and Juliet takes the violent and tragic story of Romeo and Juliet and almost makes it comedic in a way. Though Gnomeo and Juliet is almost a parody of the original, it has some major differences in the storyline and the plot. From changes in character development to characters being completely omitted from the story, the differences between The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare and Gnomeo and Juliet by Rocket Pictures are much easier to find than the similarities. However, comparing and contrasting the two will reveal 3 underlying themes as similarities and 3 key differences that can alter the entire storyline. Two rivaling …show more content…
Some key differences are Romeo and Juliet don’t die, Lady Capulet doesn’t exist, and Juliet realized Romeo had faked his death, but Romeo never realized Juliet faked her death. First and foremost, both stories have two rivaling groups which form the base of the story. In Romeo and Juliet, these rivaling groups are the Montague and Capulets, but since Gnomeo and Juliet are intended for the younger audience, the rivaling groups are Red and Blue. The first major difference between Gnomeo and Juliet is there is no Lady Capulet, which makes Juliet even more dependent on the Nurse. In the original Romeo and Juliet, Juliet doesn't have a good relationship with her mother but Lady Capulet does push Juliet to marry Paris. Without a mother, Juliet's father isn't so strict with her so Juliet isn't forced to marry Paris (or get disowned). Thus giving Juliet more freedom to go wherever she wants, not being stuck in her home as is in the original play. It is because of this freedom that causes Juliet to not fake her death, so in Gnomeo and Juliet, the second major difference is that Romeo fakes his death instead of Juliet. Though this could have been said as a similarity, it is a difference primarily due to the fact that Juliet realized Romeo had faked his death. In the original, after Juliet faked her death Romeo thought she really died and ended up taking his own life. However, in Gnomeo and Juliet, after Romeo was thought to be dead Juliet spotted him alive and didn't take her own life. If she had taken her life, it could be assumed Romeo would have done the same after her, and so the final difference is the most important of all, Gnomeo and Juliet don't die at the end. The ending that ties the entire story together as a tragedy is changed, and the viewers instead receive a
