Good and Evil: How It is Represented in Certain Cinderella Tales When the word ‘curse’ is heard, the usual thought is it would be evil and whoever is placing the curse is most likely also evil. It is easy to say that this mystical creature in the fairy tale is bad and they are trying to harm the good protagonist, whether it be over a wrongdoing done to them or just because they can. The people in fairy tales overcome obstacles that are set up by the inherently good and evil nature of the main character and the characters around him or her. The way good and evil are portrayed can be a caricature of what the characters, situations, and obstacles represent in real life. The birth mother of the princess in question is used to set up the series of events she must go through to find her happy ending. There is an evil in the unknown workings of things, as a single selfish act or request can affect the other people around oneself and may change a person’s entire life. In this story it is shown that it could make the person better in the end or at least let them find happiness they wouldn’t have found under different circumstances. Once the original queen tells the king he can only marry someone more beautiful, accomplished, and wise than she, the tale will take its turn to taboo in a manner of seconds. The father of the princess realizes she is more beautiful and charming and he realized he was “burning with desire that drove him mad,” which is an evil all on its own (Perrault 110). In many cultures this is frowned upon to want someone who is your own blood and in the story our princess is forced to flee her kingdom because of this desire. The thought of unwanted sexual attention is just as evil as malice and abuse given by stepmothers and their children. Though this particular evil is not spoken of nearly so much, it is not as easy to talk about or think about but eventually it must be dealt with as an issue. Even though the godmother’s advice doesn’t always get the results either of them wants, she is still a catalyst to the story in which the princess leaves the kingdom. The dresses and skins the princess has acquired due to the advice helps her later on in the story. Many times when there are problems within a family, children need help from someone who is not in the household. Whether it be a relative or a teacher they trust, reaching out can be crucial to find the good that will help in the battle to fight the evil.
