Jesus Christ, an expert teacher, who used parables to reveal the truth to some and conceal it from others. In taking into consideration the audience Jesus was speaking to, one must understand the background and customs of that day. The scene takes place in the area of Palestine and among the people were shepherds, farmers, Pharisees and scribes.
It was common in that day for seed to be sown on different types of ground. Some sowed seeds on ground that had not been plowed, and consisted of rocks and weeds. Then there were some farmers who took the time to plow the ground and clear it of rocks, weeds, thistles, and other vegetation that would inhibit the production of good crops for harvesting. So, they understood what Jesus was saying about sowing.
Jesus relates to them in a manner that they could relate to by telling them an earthly story with a heavenly meaning. A spiritual truth illustrated with seed and soils. He speaks figuratively using symbolic language to represent two truths. The seed

Among the audience were Pharisees and scribes who rejected Jesus and His teaching. They heard the Word but Satan made them dull of hearing keeping them from the truth. The stony ground represents people who hear the Word and professes it with delight but their hearts are not receptive enough to change. Then there were those who heard the Word and were more receptive to it but would rather have what the world offered them. Its riches, pleasures and lusts were more appealing to them. Remember the young ruler who asked Jesus what he must do to inherit eternal life? Jesus tells him to go and give all that he had to the poor. The young ruler was saddened and went away sorrowful. Jesus used this as a teaching moment and told the disciples “it would be easier for a camel to go through a needle’s eye than a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God” (Luke 18:18-25
