Good Trumps Evil In Grimm's Little Snow-White

Every story has some sort of underlying message, motive, or subject matter the author tries to get across to the readers. One of the Grimm brother's strongest suits, when it came to their fairy tales, was in fact, their themes. From coming of age, marriage, and loyalty, to society and class, justice and judgement, and religion, the Grimm brothers had a variety of topics that they felt needed to be addressed at the time. But, even today, readers who come across the Grimm brother's writings are able to take into consideration the matter in the story and see how it plays into today's world. Good trumps evil means that good always wins. Evil always puts up a fight, but the good overcomes everything evil tries to throw in its way. In "Little Snow-White" (1884), it states, "At first she would not go to the wedding at all, but she had no peace, and must go to see the young Queen. And when she went in she knew Snow-white; and she stood still with rage and fear, and could not stir. But iron slippers had already been put upon the fire, and they were brought in with tongs, and set before her. Then she was forced to put on the red-hot shoes, and dance until she dropped down dead." (Grimm 6). The queen was so mean and nasty towards Snow when she was alive and went out of her way to kill her. The queen received what she deserved when she had to where hot shoes and dance until she was dead. Snow got her happy ending and the queen got the ending all villains do, because good trumps evil. Likewise, in "Cinderella" (1884), after the prince found out who his true bride was and married Cinderella, her "false sisters" tried to get on her good side and get some of her fortune, but "for their wickedness and falsehood, they were punished with blindness as long as they lived." (Grimm 5). Her step-mother and step-sisters treated her so horribly and forbid her from going to the ball, but fate gave her everything she needed to attend the ball. It is so powerful because no one should feel like they cannot live their life due to the simple fact of someone wanting to tear them down. It is something a lot of people need to know that they can overcome and prosper from. The audience is everyone. In "The Social Influence of Good vs. Evil" (2013), Bryan Wood states, "Violence and evil are no strangers to our world, and they are never going away. However, if we learn to recognize the sources of derelict behavior, we may be able to intervene and prevent good people from making tragic decisions." (Wood 2). Thus, everyone needs to have this important message in their life and in their heart, because who knows, they could be the evil in someone's life and they can learn and be better. Being evil is a choice, so why be evil when you can get a happy ending being good? Having said that, a reader's reaction to this theme would be pure gratefulness. It is so important that people realize that being mean and evil will get you nowhere. Being that one thing holding someone down or tearing someone apart is heart-rending.
