Writer, Nicolas Carr, in his article, “Is Google Making Us Stupid”, expresses the search engine Google is effecting the human mind. Carr’s purpose is to covey his idea that the web changes the way humans think. He creates a pessimistic tone to his audience that spending a lot of time on the internet is bad for the mind. I don’t believe Carr made an effective argument on this article because of the tone he used, the references he provided, and how the article was laid out. Carr begins his article to the readers by acknowledging the web is messing with his brain and he is not thinking the way he used to.
In the article Nicholas Carr published called “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” (Carr, 557) he explains how the Web and technology has impacted us. He also has written several books and articles about technology, business, and culture. (Carr, 556) I believe Nicholas has enough background information to be reliable for what is in his article.
In “Is Google Making Us Stupid,” Nicholas Carr argues that Google is deteriorating the human mind. He mentions that people no longer want or even need to deeply read information and retain it because the particular information that they are looking for can just be Googled. In fact, he argues against this by stating that everything is not available on Google, and things that are available on Google are not necessarily true. Another con of this, he states, is that it is extremely difficult to read off of a computer screen. Carr argues that people’s brains are not programmed to read something in depth if it is off of a computer or phone screen.
Are there logical or emotional appeals that can affect a reader? Could it temporarily or maybe even permanently affect your personal opinion? In the article “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” by Nicholas G. Carr, there is a clear effect of multiple forms of appeals being used in his writing. The excellent use of tone, fiction, and multiple rhetorical devices make his article a well-written one. The author uses logos, mainly because he’s trying to appeal to a more logical and more intelligent audience.
In the article, “Is Google Making Us Stupid,” by Nicholas Carr, Carr claims that the internet changes how we think as humans and as a society. His claim comes from his observation that he was losing his capacity to read large amounts of text, after having been spoiled by the immediate nature of the internet. Though he seems to believe that the internet will negatively impact society, it is unclear what his intentions are. Whether he is trying to persuade us that the internet is negative or whether he is just trying to get us to think about the effects of the internet, Carr utilizes literary devices such as rhetorical appeals--ethos, logos, and pathos--and procatalepsis in his argument to effectively critique the internet. Carr starts off

For my analysis essay, I will be analyzing the effectiveness of the rhetorical devices in Nicholas Carr ’s essay “Is Google Making Us Stupid?”. Carr, a writer who primarily focuses on technology and business, makes a bold claim that the ability to simply search for answers to our issues is weakening our problem solving skills. As the saying goes: if you do not use it, you lose it. Although he admits that the advantages of having unlimited knowledge at our fingertips is invaluable, he also claims that humans tend to misuse the Internet- as soon as anything requires true thought, they go to search engines which think for them.
Google is changing the way we perceive, process and interpret about different things. “I'm not thinking the way I used to think. I can feel it most strongly when I'm reading… Now my concentration often starts to drift after two or three pages. I get fidgety, lose the thread, begin looking for something else to do.(Carr 313)”
Nicholas Carr in his article “Is Google Making Us Stupid,” explains that humans are being programed to process information like a machine, which is making us lose the ability to think for ourselves and losing our humanity. He uses a lot of bias sources in his writing about the “programing” that google is doing; which leads me to disagree with his assessment of google and what it is doing to us. My synopsis of his article is that google, or technology, is not making us programed to take in information at face value and losing our humanity because we are relying on it; but rather, google and technology is letting us embrace our humanity through our creation of technology by letting our individual thoughts be enhanced by giving us access to other
In the article “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” by Nicholas Carr he clearly states, “I can feel it, too. Over the past few years I’ve had an uncomfortable sense that someone, or something, has been tinkering with my brain, remapping the neural circuitry, reprogramming the memory” (Carr). This quote suggests that the author feels the effects of the Internet just as everyone else has. Most people would agree that use of the Internet is a daily task yet few can deal with life without the Internet. The Net has made life easier but as Carr suggest it is my contention that it is changing the way people think thus making us “stupid”.
In this article “Is Google making us stupid?” Nicholas Carr is taking about how the internet affect the way we reading. The author find himself feel differently about the way he read. When he read he felt very strongly about something. The deep reading and long reading that used to be normanly become very difficult.
Technology is everywhere in today’s world and it is rapidly evolving. As technology evolves, so does the society using it. Technology is negatively affecting the way we read, write, and live. In the article “Is Google Making Us Stupid,” Nicholas Carr focuses on how the introduction of newer ease of access technologies has changed the way we read, write, and even think. “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” by Nicholas Carr discusses the remapping of people’s brains upon the release of new technologies.
In my opinion, I think that these companies are changing the world and making it worse. We should be able to have great technology. Follow me as I discuss about the political cartoon of these companies. In Document 1 14-6, the political cartoon shows a Google van that is driving away quickly and knocking four business men out, they happen to be a Taxi driver, Truck driver, bus driver, and a privacy.
In the future Google is expected to continue to grow at an exponential rate. More and more companies are starting to expand into the internet world and allow for internet orders, only adding to Google's giant expanse of
