Google's Memo About The Diversity Issues

An unnamed software engineer, whom work at google wrote an internal memo about the diversity issues that he had noticed within the company. The memo was leaked and had gone viral on social media. In the memo, he wrote about how the underrepresentation of women in the tech field was because of biological differences and having requirements to reach equality within diversity is bad for business. He stated that because google wants to achieve a more diverse workplace, the company has created programs that single out certain races and genders while accommodating others. Due to the memo going public, Google and the engineer have gotten backlash creating a Human Resource (HR) storm. Google reaction was to terminate the engineer due to him violating their code of conduct. I believe the HR department has a big part to play in creating the company’s environment/culture. The memo has made an underlying issues public, I’m sure some of the employees agreed and some did not. HR now has an emotionally unsafe work place for employees that fit the criteria described in the memo. I believe that there is always a tactful way to voice your opinion and I believe the engineer should have approached the HR department instead of sending an internal memo to his colleagues. He was expressing his right to freedom of speech, which led him to get terminated. The fact that google fired the individual for stating his opinion, may have other employee scared to speak up, adding to the hostile work environment. HR has the task to come up with training programs to help its employees grow, I feel that these programs are not in jeopardize and they will have to create or cut programs which my cost money or demotivate
