Jorge Luis Borges is an author who had a great influence on the direction of literay fiction with his genre-bending metafictions, essays, and poetry (Poetry Foundation). He himself was influenced by such persons as Edgar Allen Poe, and Franz Kafka.

In “The Gospel of Mark” by Jorge Luis Borges, a sense of irony is present throughout the story due to several key reasons that I will elaborate on in this paper.

The Gutres family is a fictional family in Jorge Luis Borges' short story "The Gospel According to Mark." The family is descended from English peasants who came to America in the 17th century. They married Native Americans and eventually forgot English. The family owns an English Bible, which they do not understand. This is ironic because the Bible is a key part of the story, but the family is unable to understand it.

The irony of the Gutres family owning an English Bible is that the Bible is a key part of the story. The story is about the family's encounter with Espinosa who tells them the story of Jesus Christ. He is a white man, and he speaks English. The Gutres family is unable to understand him, but they are drawn to his story. They ask him to repeat the gospel in order to understand it more. They ask him various questions about it.

In the end, the Gutres family comes to a completely wrong conclusion about Espinosa. They believe that he is a god, and they crucify him. This is a tragic ending, but it is also ironic.
