The grandparent scam involves criminals phoning older people under the guise of one of their grandchildren. The criminals persuade grandparents to send money but not tell parents and other relatives. According to the FBI reports, the grandparent scam, which first appeared in 2008, is growing more sophisticated, as criminals can collect personal information from Facebook and other social media. The criminals know their grandchild’s first name, gender, and age. This makes it all the more believable. The key opened the door to the criminals’ success is that they narrow down the victims to grandparents. Grandparents who live apart from their grandchildren can’t catch up with their grandchildren; as they don’t have enough information about their grandchildren’s present situation, it is easy to deceive them.
