In James W. Loewen’s “The Land of Opportunity,” he states that social class affects the way children are raised. He discusses the inequality in today’s society and how the textbooks in high school do not give any social class information. The students in today’s time are not taught everything they should be taught. He states that your family’s wealth is what makes up your future. Loewen discusses that people with more money can study for the SATs more productively and get a better score than someone who has less money.
Anyon says that “public schools in complex industrial societies like our own make available different types of educational experience and curriculum knowledge to students in different socials classes;” and In my experience that I’ve had with school is a working class and I support it because it is a good way to teach kids. Jean Anyon’s article was speaking of the different types of schools there is out there and how they work depending on the social class that they’re in. Some social classes are harder than others because it just all depends on how the kids are and how they act and how the teachers are told to teach and how they actually teach. Sociologist Daniel Rossides describes five social class: the upper class, the upper-middle class, the lower middle class, the working class and the lower class. Social class is decided by achieved and ascribed characteristics, and we can change our class by achieved work. Social class has powerful impacts on a person’s life.
Sociologists have different perspectives on education in society. Functionalists agree that societies are hierarchical that the most intelligent people will rise to the top and fill the most demanding roles in society. Also, that institutions such as education will educate people so that they will fit in the correct occupational role. Differential attainment is the difference of performance in education. Some sociological explanations of why some social groups underachieve in education focus on; class, gender and ethnicity.

Marxism, functionalism and post-modernism each offer different perspectives on the issue of social class, stratification, and class inequalities within society. Functionalism takes the view of society as like the human body, where each institution is like the organs of the body. Rose was placed in vocational school by accident, rose decided on staying enrolled with low level students. Rose observed his teacher and classmates and talks about them throughout his essay. Teachers show they don’t care about their students by giving lack of education and by using physical violence and all just to control them.
In my life, numerous circumstances from the past and the present continuously affects my life. Unfortunately, my social class status affects me the most economic status. I am a lower-middle class worker. Apparently, my low income is not enough to support my wife and children. Unluckily, my parents were poor and they could not afford to pay for my education.
What social class you’re born in makes a huge difference in your decision making both in the simulation and in real life. For example, if you are born into a high social class, you can make large mistake that can cost a lot of money, and not blink an eye. While if a person in the lower class were to make the same mistake, it could put them in even a worse off situation. A person born into a high class can use the power that comes from the money they have to get into a collage of their choosing, to buy cars, to eat better, and to get better healthcare. While a person born into a lower class can’t afford these things, which can hinder there potential for success.

In this essay, I have chosen to explore the idea of how social classes affect the way we treat people. The four texts To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Me Before You by Jojo Moyes, The Help by Kathryn Stockett, and Water For Elephants by Sara Gruen all capture the idea in which social class can affect our lives. In each text, we see how social classes divide people from another, that most characters are aware of where they stand in their society because of social status, and how relationships across different social classes can be formed.
