The Heart is Not Always What it Seems
Charles Dickens uses the heart throughout Great Expectations. It is used as a symbol or motif. The heart is used in many ways like the love of family and friends.
One way Dickens uses the heart is Miss Havisham’s past. Her mother died almost right after giving birth to Miss Havisham, so she never had a motherly figure in her life. After this tragic incident her father remarried secretly and had a son, later told as Arthur. He never told her until his second wife died. Miss Havisham later found a man whom she would love “There appeared upon the scene a certain man, who made love to Miss Havisham”(Dickens 120) People told her that this man was showy, but a gentleman who were looked up to in this time. He meets Estella at the age of nine because he was sent to see Miss Havisham by Mr. (Uncle) Pumblechook. When Pip was there he met a beautiful girl at the gate, Estella. He was instantly in love and when he went in Miss Havisham caught this and asked him “What do you think of her?”(Dickens 43) which he replied “I think she is very proud… I think she is very pretty.”(Dickens 44). When he was apprenticed to Joe a few years later he went back to Miss Havisham to tell her and Miss Havisham asked if he was looking for someone and he responded with “You are looking round for Estella?”(Dickens 80). He was looking for but didn't say and she responded that Estella was studying overseas. Later on in the book when Pip becomes a gentleman he sees Estella and falls in love with her again. He goes to Miss Havisham's to pick Estella up and Miss Havisham says “Love her, love her, love her!...If she favors you, love her.
