What people in this world inspire us the most? For almost all of us, our parents do. Pip, a young boy in Great Expectations Has many different people influence his life and manners. One of the biggest influences in his life was the generous, forgiving, and loyal Joe Gargery. His second and possibly most interesting influencer is the spooky and revengous Miss Havisham. These two opposites do have similarities in their past, these two characters have suffered in the past by particular men. Though they both suffered, both do have the responsibility of taking care of children. Both of these people take suffering a different way and reflect it on Pip and the people they take care of.

Miss Havisham is an old lady who lives in a castle with her adopted “servent” Estella. Miss Havisham has “trained” Estella to seek revenge on men after Miss Havisham was left at the altar. Miss Havisham asked Pip to come to her house. When Pip arrives she is greeted by Estella who brings him upstairs. Miss Havisham is sitting there partially dressed in all white. She tells Estella to play with Pip and she responds that she doesn’t want to because he’s common. Then Miss Havisham says, “Well? you can break his heart” (46). Estella then plays with the boy calling him common with thick hands and boots. This shows how Miss Havisham wants revenge on men and boys due to what happened with her marriage. But since she is too old to get revenge, she teaches a girl not much older than Pip to get revenge. Not only is Miss Havisham affecting men, she is also affecting Estella and her future self. Nobody knows what happened to Miss Havisham, but it will devastate her for the rest of her life. Miss Havisham's goal is to lay dead in her wedding gown in her same place.
