One of the most iconic songs in the 2010s and playing in every car was Taylor Swift's “Bad Blood”. Written from her own feelings and experiences, she sings,” You know it used to be mad love. So take a look what you've done. 'Cause baby, now we got bad blood!” The pain caused by her love turned into revenge, now creating “bad blood”. This is portrayed similarly throughout the novel Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, the character of Miss Havisham embodies how love can be blinding and that revenge can influence a person’s actions. A reunion at Barnard Inn sparked a conversation between Pip and Herbert. Their conversation shifts towards Estella, where Herbert emphasizes, “That girl’s hard and haughty and capricious to the last degree, and has been brought up by Miss Havisham to wreak revenge on the male sex” (Dickens 177). This establishes Estella’s characteristics using words like “hard”, “haughty”, and capricious” to depict how Miss Havisham raised her to be. Her desire for love affected her upbringing of Estella, creating the person she is now. A common saying regarding this lesson is “Hurt people hurt people”. This famous quote is represented through Miss Havisham, who was hurt and hurting others. Unknown to her, Compeyson’s choices to her affected her choices for Estella and others. This chain reaction caused reason for Miss Havisham to make Estella from her desires. During a regular visit to the Satis house, Miss Havisham whispers in Estella’s ear,” Break their hearts my pride and hope” and continues to say “Break their hearts and have no mercy!” (Dickens 95). This repetition of “Breaking their hearts” explain how Miss Havisham has no regard for Pip’s feelings. No mercy goes to confirm that Miss Havisham’s decisions are embedded in revenge.
