In 221 BC, construction was started on the Great Wall of China. It was led by the emperor of the Qin, Shi Huangdi. In 206 BC, They finished it. During those years, there were many costs. The wall was built with many benefits too. The Great Wall’s benefits didn’t outweigh the costs though, because of three reasons. Many people died building it, it took 15 years to build, and it costed valuable resources.

To begin, many people died building the Great Wall. Roughly 20% of China’s population worked on the wall. Most of the work force consists of soldiers to guard the wall and criminals to build it. Few were peasants and regular people. About 800,000 people worked on the wall. Only half survived though. That decreased the population by 400,000
