Imagine you are living in Ancient China during the time of the Qin dynasty, and you are ordered to stop the construction of the Great Wall of China. Then there was an invasion, the Qin wish they didn’t stop the construction. The Qin Dynasty started the construction of the Great Wall and the Han kept it going. This all leads up to how the Great Wall of China outweighed the cost, because the wall protected China, brought glory to China, and made the Qin and Han well known. To start off, the Great wall of China protected China.
The Great Wall was made by the Qin and Han dynasty's to keep out invaders and other enemies. The benefits did outweigh the cost because it kept your city protected, it was harder for invaders to attack. They also put troops in the frontier areas of the Wall to increase the security level. According to document A it states that "the government will construct walled cities, well protected by high walls, deep moats, catapults, and thorns." This shows that the Qin and Han wanted to make it harder for the mongols to attack and that china wanted to be prepared for when other dangerous situations happen.

This shows how the loss of soldiers happened by constructing the Great Wall they could've just have more soldiers protect around China.
The Yuan Dynasty under the Mongol empire has an extensive amount of public works as they built granaries to protect the dynasty from famine, and created large road and water networks. These public works allowed for the people to have large surplus of food and water and also be able to travel in a more organized manner with the road system created (New World Encyclopedia, Country Studies). Everyone in the Yuan dynasty had access to these public works as they were used to the economy and to keep everyone fed. While having these very useful public works the Yuan dynasty also had lots of techniques using technology for warfare and engineering. While using new warfare technology from the Chinese the Yuan were able to create a strategy to take down fortification by studying the way forts were made.
The cost of the Great Wall outweighed the benefits due to the fact that it allowed for and caused lots of suffering, harsh working conditions, and socioeconomic disparity. Despite being made to reduce suffering, the building of the Great Wall did the opposite, negatively impacting those who weren’t even working on the wall. In the Qin dynasty, many were sent to work on the wall. It states “Soldiers forced to leave their families and villages for several years” (Document E) Not only did soldiers have to endure the hardship of leaving their families, the families were likely in despair at losing a family member.
It also shifted China closer to the Silk Road. To add,many may believe that the benefits didn’t outweigh the costs because of the lives that were lost. “If we die,unburied,in the wilds,our corpses will feed the crows.” The Chinese workers lives were lost because while building the Great wall of china some structures had fell upon them leaving them dead. The difference in the two empire’s coming to power was to account for their variance in political rule. After the Qin dynasty, the Han ruled China for four centuries, enacting numerous political changes and governing one of the most efficacious dynasties in Chinese history.

I will also list some facts about the Great Wall of China to prove that it was not worth it. I think that the Great Wall was not worth it because a lot of people died or starved to death. They also lost a lot of time in their life trying to build the wall. One thing that proves it's not worth it is that they didn't get paid anything for building the wall.
With the wall comes its high costs like the cost of materials to build it or the money paid to the workers that are building it. When President Trump was doing the presidential campaign, he predicted the border was going to cost about twelve billion dollars, but that turned out to be untrue. Vanda Felbab-Brown herself writes, "... A Department of Homeland Security (DHS) internal report in February put the cost at $21.6 billion, but that may be a major underestimate.”
This is because there were many advantages. For example, It had kept out unwanted people. What I mean is it had made it very hard for invaders or countries who wanted to start a war; to get through or over the great wall. Another example is the fact that it had saved many crops and valuables from getting stolen from other countries. China has always been known to grow or make things that many other countries like so this wall helped those things from not being stolen or destroyed.
