Many bands have had large influences on our current music, and even society. Although some may not be as impactful as others, all have made at least a small change in how we perceive, and make, current music. One of the bands that have made one of the largest influences is Creedence Clearwater Revival. They are a New Orleans style rock band with four members that originated in San Francisco. In this essay we will talk about their influence on music, and specific genres, how they intertwined with protests during a very large war, and what happened during their breakup. Many of their songs have been used as protests against war and violence. One song, Fortunate Son, was used a lot against the Vietnam War specifically. Although the song was mostly used for that reason it wasn’t the only meaning, the song is actually about how the 99% are being taken advantage of by the 1% so it basically comments on how the rich and famous feed off of the working class. In fact, the director of the music video for Fortunate Son had a quote about the people of Taos Pueblo about how they liked the song, and band, because it encouraged peaceful protests instead of violence “For me, protest right now is just showing pure positivity in the face of division and anger. I wanted to highlight the community and positivity that everybody shares. I met so many beautiful people. I went to the Taos Pueblo people, into their land, and met with the war chief, and they were very big fans of CCR. They were so welcoming because they knew the song and the band, and they really loved the idea of protest through positivity.”. But even though Fortunate Son wasn’t technically about the Vietnam War, it was used in almost all movies about the Vietnamese War. Some of these movies include Forrest Gump, Wardogs, and Tropic Thunder. This may be because CCR played during the war, so many soldiers listened to it during their deployment.
