In today’s world, with so many wonderful types and genres of music to experience, it’s difficult to establish a preferred genre. But sometimes, music penetrates past the ears and mind, into the very essence of one’s soul. In the early 1990’s, Seattle, Washington gave birth to a new kind of music. Perhaps first conceived in a garage, grunge music is a grandson of Rock and Roll and the father of post-grunge. It is a style of music that incorporates elements from other styles of music, such as punk and metal, but has a more radio friendly format than its predecessors. (Grierson, Tim. Electric guitars, acoustic guitars, bass, and drums come together to create the harmonies, melodies, and rhythms that made Seattle famous. A wide variety of issues are addressed in the music, such as, drug use, pain, relationships, hate, anger, and life in general. Grunge’s unique musical techniques have been defined by some as sloppy, but they are designed to focus more on mood and feelings rather than intricate and difficult guitar solos or exotic lyrical prowess. The timbre of grunge seems to be a bit muddled by design and the sound is overall a bit dissonant, but that isn’t true of every song and band in the genre. Homophonic melodies also seem to make up the majority of this genre with heavy chordal progressions placed behind the lead guitar riffs. A major theme seems to be, having consonant verse melodies followed by dissonant choruses, which makes the quieter verses stand out more against the screaming of the chorus’ anthem. The lyrical content also has some subliminal messages that require some thought and consideration when listening, as many of the lyrics sound like utter nonsense if only taken at face
