Nirvana Introduction Nirvana brought an introduction to a new type of music, Even though Nirvana lost their lead, they still continued to sustain their legacy in grunge music. They had a slow but steady rise to fame that came to a sudden and painful end. Winning many awards and impacting many people with the feel of grunge, Nirvana had lost many things alongside their journey. Nirvana ushered the age of grunge, won Grammy awards, and secured a place in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, making them a band that blazed their own trail through the 20th century. Kurt’s Childhood People in Kurt Cobain’s past were believed to have influenced some of his future.
In the documentary Nirvana: The Untold Stories, the film goes into detail about the emergence of the American rock band Nirvana formed in the year 1990 by singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain, bassist Krist Novoselic, and drummer Dave Grohl. During this time period Seattle’s music scene was composed primarily of manufactured pop which adolescence had already grown tired of, this was when Nirvana appeared on the scene, paired with the right circumstances, such as quality song writing skills and un-parallel music sound, the band successfully introduced the world to the new music genre called Grunge. This new, progressive, sound was what helped sell Seattle to the masses or put them on the map in regards to Seattle’s own defining culture like other
On August 27th, 1991 Pearl Jam released one of the greatest debut albums known, Ten. Starting from Washington like many other bands such as Nirvana, who played a huge role in the early 90’s, Pearl Jam truly broke the Seattle sound into the mainstream. These two bands were the development and origin of the Seattle sound, or what we know it as today: grunge. Many would believe that Nirvana’s Nevermind, would be the break and mainstream of grunge, but Pearl Jam’s Ten, kept them there. Pearl Jam has a truly unique musicality while containing the harsher sounds of the electric guitar and bass, but rather than speed, takes a slower tempo. Not only does Pearl Jam’s Ten offer a brand new sound of music, the album truly tackles dark subjects, it
Grange was a BIG hit in the 90’s. Grunge’s “anti-fashion” made its mark on America, and it made its mark big. It brought out a “do it yourself” attitude amongst people and got rid of the materialistic era of excess, and ushered in an era of grunge. This changed can be pinned on the market crash in the late 80’s, forcing people to downgrade not only their cars, house, and food choices, but also their fashion, making grunge big. They were grungy, wild, and dumb (or maybe just
In a time of economic prosperity, a rise in the standard of living and rock and roll, also known as the “happy days”, the 1950s were a time looked back on with nostalgia. On the other hand, the 1950s were also met with many problems involving civil rights, the Cold War and McCarthyism. After the end of World War II, Americans came home to jobs available and a period of consensus. Consensus meaning there wasn’t much debate in politics. However tensions quickly rose throughout the nation when Joseph McCarthy made serious accusations about the State Department.
He wanted to create something new and different. Cobain focused on incorporating melodies and lyrics into what was already punk music. “He hated the stereotypical, self-centered rock star image,” (McDougall, 2013). Nirvana's second album, Nevermind, reinvented rock and roll (“Nirvana”, 2011). Nevermind had a major impact on American culture.
In 1956, Elvis spoke about the way he moved on stage: "Some people tap their feet, some people snap their fingers, and some people sway back and forth. I just sorta do ‘em all together, I guess." (1). The media of that time was extremely critical of his style and movements. Rock and roll was increasingly attacked and there was growing opposition to its supposedly negative influence on America’s youth.
During the mid-80’s, in the rainy city of Seattle, a musical movement was born. The “Seattle Sound”, commonly called Grunge, is trademarked for its distorted guitars, heavy drumming, and flannel shirts. When you think grunge, you think basic, if not dirty, as many grunge musicians became known for having messy appearances and were repelled from any sort of dramatic stage presence. With the help of bands like Soundgarden and Nirvana, the popularity of grunge increased and from the late 80’s to the mid 90’s, it became the favored type of music to listen to. Regardless of the fact that most grunge bands broke up or faded away by the late 1990s, their influence still continues to affect rock music today.
The rise of grunge music caused the rise of punk rock, alternative, and it paved the way for post-hardcore music to reach its
Grunge Music Grunge music was one of the most popular genres in the 1990’s, bringing a new style of rock with gritty distortion and new styles of hair and clothing. One band some may now that was a popular grunge band in the 90’s was Nirvana, which consisted of lead singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain, drummer Dave Grohl, and bassist Krist Novoselic. This band was mostly popular for their hit album “Nevermind”. One of their most popular songs on this album, “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, has been described as a teen revolution anthem, meaning that this song gives teens power. Thus, this is one of the most popular Nirvana songs to date.
More artists were being recognized for their use it and they will be coming household names just like the Beatles at the time. This was a big part of country history because never before was it this popular. In the 1970s another subgenre of country was born in Texas, that would forever change country music. This genre is called progressive country and its birthplace was Austin TX.
Grunge is a sub-genre of alternative rock and started in the mid-1980 in American state of Washington, particularly in Seattle. By the early 1990s grunge spread to California and other parts of America building strong followings and signing major record deals. Grunge became most successful in the first half of the 1990s, due mainly to the release of Nirvana’s Nevermind, Pearl jam’s Ten and Soundgarden’s Badmotorfinger. The success of these bands boosted the popularity of alternative rock and made grunge the most popular form of hard rock music at the time. In the late 1990s most grunge bands disbanded or faded but their influence continues to effect modern day music.
The lonely city of Seattle was important to the development of Grunge and it may also have been the key to its downfall. With no major labels in the city, the bands didn't know what to expect from them. With the freedom of no major record labels, many musicians were allowed to create music to please their peers. The gloomy rainy atmosphere of the city of Seattle resulted in grunge, it was the sound of friends going into a basement on a cold rainy day, drinking alcohol and performing. At the time no one signed contracts, a shake with the hand and the band and the record label were now in business together.
Rock music in the 1960s was egalitarian, eclectic, and real based on a number of reasons. To explain the 'real' piece of rock music in the 1960s, one would have to know that there was war going on overseas that didn't make sense to Americans as to why it was going on (the Vietnam war). There was also still severe inequality between blacks and whites causing protests to occur via the Civil Rights movement, led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. There was inequality between women and mens rights. These issues caused dissatisfaction to occur in the American people.
Despite the unusualness that is related to the grunge look, which is sometimes referred to as a form of extravagance by others, it is truly just a simply fashion trend. It does not ask for diamond pieces that cost thousands of dollars, the leathers and furs typically used are artificial, and you can be in printed black T-shirts and boots, and you are in a grunge outfit already. Naturally, the print has to have some depth to it. It cannot look like you have gotten it from a kindergarten or some store where the people still believe in rainbows and unicorns.
