The book Myths & Legends by Anthony Horowitz is a book that conveys the various adventures and fables of the gods and goddesses. Gods are supposed to be the leaders of the world, the immortals graced with special powers and innate abilities. However, their behavior is not much different than that of humans. In Myths & Legends, gods are portrayed in their true colors -- selfish, impulsive, and jealous. Selfishness is the first characteristic that comes to mind when thinking about the gods.
The goddess of justice, one of the three Horai, was a daughter of Zeus and the Titaness Themis. DIONYSOS (Dionysus) The god of wine and debauchery was a son of Zeus and Semele (or in a few unorthodox accounts, of Zeus and Demeter or Dione). EILEITHYIA The goddess of childbirth was a daughter of Zeus and Hera.
Most societies, both past and present, worship one or multiple deities. The powers and characteristics of these gods vary among cultures, and the personalities of one society’s deities directly influence the culture and beliefs of its people. The discrepancies between the religions of different civilizations can be observed through the literary works of their religion and mythology. The Judeo-Christian God, who is shown in the Bible to be absolute both in power and in judgment, is antithetical to the Greek gods, who are depicted as having human traits and flaws. In Homer’s Odyssey, many gods are shown to act on their own self-interest, keeping favorites among the mortals and conspiring against other gods.
Greek mythology has changed and evolved over the years to accommodate different beliefs and ideas. These characters in Greek mythology have shaped stories over the years. It has integrated into several different cultures including the Romans. The gods and beasts of Greek Mythology were always fighting and warring with each other and destroying one another. Greek Gods Greek gods and goddesses were mortals that would fight from time to time.
Imagine living in ancient times when science did not explain the way the universe works, rather myths filled with death and destruction, and glory and Gods were all you had to turn to. According to Bulfinch, "The myths of the ancients were allegorical and symbolical, and contained some moral, religious, or philosophical truth or historical fact, under the form of an allegory", but came in process of time to be understood literally. The ancient Greeks took what was originally meant to be fiction and made it fact. Although scientific advancements have taken the place of the myths for most people today, the ancient Greeks devoutly believed in Gods and goddesses like Athena who in their minds influenced everything around them. In Greek Mythology,
Gods, goddesses, deities, heroes and weak men and women fighting for the overall good, monsters, cultures from an unknown world. These are the figures that bring chaos and control to the Greek person's. The oldest account of these gods and goddesses are from the Greek writer Homer, who wrote “The Illiad and Odyssey.” People believe that he was the one that created these gods and goddesses, but others believe that it was many different people that wrote different parts of the religion. The Greeks believed in a polytheistic religion, meaning they worshipped more than one god.
Gods and goddesses were very important to the Greek culture and their daily life revolved around worshiping each one of them. Many movies have been focused around Greek culture and how the gods and goddesses were cherished in society. Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief is an example of a movie in which the Greek gods and goddesses are shown in today's culture through movies. This movie embraces each of the gods and goddesses throughout the whole movie. Each demigod reflects their godly parent, showing the strengths and traits of each god and goddess in which the Greeks had once described them as.
The humans of ancient Greece revered their gods. Festivals and rites of worship honored their divine superiors and proved people’s piety. Ovid’s narrator in the Metamorphoses offers a valuable note of caution in response to the tragic episode between the talented mortal Arachne and the goddess Minerva: “do not compete with gods, and do not boast” (183). The gods acknowledge their lofty position above the mortals; the mortals, more often than not, willingly accept this relationship. The exchanges between the gods and the humans, however, indicate otherwise.
Greek mythology, part of one of the oldest religion, is composed of many gods and goddess that are honored in stories that tell what things are the way it is and reason why gods and mortals exist. There are many gods and goddess out in the mythology. The main gods are known as the major gods, for example Zeus, Hera, Aphrodite, Apollo, Artemis, Poseidon, Athena and Hades There are also minor gods like, Nike, Nyx, Nemesis, Iris, Hecate, and Morpheus (Goodreads.com). Even though there are both minor and major gods, without even one of the gods, Greek mythology would not for that well. I will be showing this by showing responsibilities of one of the minor goddess, Iris.
Greek mythology can be viewed as a mirror to the ancient Greek civilization. Ancient Greek myths and legends often reflected how the Greeks saw themselves. Myths were used by Greeks to make justifications of every existing aspect of earth as well as their own society. In myths, Greek gods & heroes often represented key aspects of the human civilization. From Greek mythology, we can learn about the favorable characteristics of humans, such as their behavior and valuable skills that were approved of by the ancient Greek society.
The Resemblance of Gods and Humans Throughout all religions, gods have always been seen as superior in every way possible. The division between humans and gods has always been prevalent and prominent. However, when the actions and motives of these gods are truly analyzed, it will become evident that the gods of Greek Mythology merely behave as humans with supernatural powers.
In the epic poem The Odyssey, Homer portrays Greek gods and goddesses as possessing human qualities and faults. Through their actions and emotions, Homer emphasizes the detrimental effects of lust, envy, wrath, and greed in ancient Grecian society. He also never fails to remind readers of the importance of respect for holy figures because of their powerful abilities to create chaos and wonder". Homer wants to prove that gods and humans share a variety of traits, and the only difference is that god don’t allow these flaws negatively to impact their society. To help further his argument, we can compare Greek gods and goddesses to that of Christianity.
Greek mythology has been one of the most complicated subjects in the field of religion and mythology. This is due to the complex relations and interactions which exists in the history of Greek gods and the humans who lived in ancient Greece. Different versions of the existence and the establishment of the superior beings were developed, which at times created suspense for readers through their interactions. The various tales which exist explain the various connections between different gods, how they relate to one another, the ideological order in which they came into existence as well as the interactions they had with humans. These tales form the basis of various religious beliefs and practices since it is perceived that it is through the interactions of the gods that humans came into existence, a situation which created the dependent relationship between mortals and gods.
Greek Mythology and its Influences on Modern Society By Jenna Marie A. Macalawa, Lyceum of the Philippines University – Cavite Campus 2014 Myths are not dissimilar to fairy tales, legends, and sagas, but its period is distinctly different from usual existential time. It is considered as an expression of childhood experiences, and it also explains the origin and meaning of the world. According to Long (1994), “The term mythology may describe a certain body of myths, for example, Greek, African, or Scandinavian, or it may refer to the study of myths” (p.694). These collections of narratives are superior when it comes to influencing different areas of knowledge. There are numerous types of mythology, but Ancient Greece is the one that has given an immense influence on modern society.
Greek and Aztec gods and goddesses played a major role in the religion of their respected ancient societies. The Greek and Aztec people created their gods in order to explain natural occurrences and phenomenons in the world around them. In Greek culture, the gods looked and acted like humans and felt similar emotions, making them easily relatable, while the Aztec gods were viewed completely differently and were not similar to humans at all. However, Greek gods, including Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades have had a much greater impact on today’s society than the Aztec gods, such as Huitzlopochtli, Tlaloc, and Quetzalcoatl. Greek Mythology had a great influence on modern day sports and the olympics, which were held in honor of the gods in ancient Greece.
