Ares was the Greek god of war and conceivably the most despised of all the Olympian gods. He is infamous for having a short temper, hostile attitude, and a desire for conflict. Being one of the more human-like gods, he was a favored subject in Greek art, and furthermore in Roman times where he played a more significant role as Mars, the Roman god of war. Despite being disliked by many, Ares was renowned for his beauty and courage. These attributes aided him to win Aphrodite, Goddess of love’s heart. They then had a daughter, Eros god of love and desire. (Cartwright 1). One of the most well-known myths involving Ares was his battle with Hercules. Ares’ son Kyknos was notorious for ambushing pilgrims who were traveling to the Oracle of Delphi. Apollo was enraged at Kyknos, and sent Hercules to kill him. He was the son of Zeus, god of the sky and ruler of the Olympian gods, and Hera, queen of the ancient Greek gods, both of whom hated him (Greek Gods and Goddesses). Ares had ten lovers, one including his sister, Aphrodite who was already married to Hephaestus. When Hephaestus became aware of the affair, he thought out a plan and humiliated the two (Karas 1). He also had seven children who were gods or goddesses including Anteros: God of reciprocated love, Deimos: God of fear, Enyalius: a war-god son, Eros: God of love, Harmonia: Goddess of harmony, Nike: Goddess of harmony, and Phobos: God of panic. Additionally, he had an astounding 33 more children who were mortals, one even being a monster Drakon Ismenian, a dragon-serpent (Atsma 3). One of Ares’ daughters was Alcippe who was almost raped by Poseidon's son Halirrhothius. Ares caught him and killed him, which infuriated Poseidon, God of the sea.
