I would have defined myth as a collection of stories used to entertain readers through the use of literary devices. I would have defined it this way because the word myth makes you think of a fictional story that still serves a purpose in the literary world. Before this class when the word “myth” was said I would immediately think of the Greek Gods and think that these are the only myths of the world. I did not realize that the word myth does not explain a specific set of things but how it explains everything. I would expect cultures that do not have access to much technology to have many myths because this is an excellent way to pass the time. Myths also provoke much thought and it allows for cultures to connect with the others around them and the nature surrounding them as well. Myths relate to concepts like truth, science, and religion because they allow the believer to put their faith into something that explains the world around them. In the Mediterranean area, the stories of Jesus Christ were not around yet so the Greeks and Romans did not have something they believed in. It is natural for humans to feel that there is a higher power. The Greeks and Romans heard the creationary myths and explanations for everything around them and it gave them a sense of identity. Everything that is seen has a mythological explanation for it and it also has a scientific explanation for it.
