A crucial issue concerning our environment that we are going to talk about today is the emission of excess carbon due to our reliance on oil, gas and coal.
Fossil fuels have been society’s primary resource since the beginning of the industrialised world, fueling not only countless technological advancements but society. Originally, these fuels were an amazing discovery as they were very cheap and available, and while they still are, society has recently discovered the horrific environmental implications of our over-reliance on oil, gas and coal.The deep drilling, mining, extraction of fuel using complex chemicals and fracturing of the earth has an unsuspected, yet the enormous cost to our planet. Greenhouse gases, trap the sun’s rays in the Earth’s atmosphere originally, causing an increase of temperature, melting sea ice, but scientists have found that changes climates all over the planet. Greenhouse gases is a crucial problem for society as it directly impacts the environment, the economy and human health. In past few years, Canada`s greenhouse gases have significantly increased. For instance, since the 1990’s Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions have increased by 20%, from the previous 1990 emissions of 613 megatonnes (Mt) of carbon dioxide equivalent to 732 mt CO2 eq. Although, there has been a slight emission reduction in 2005 to 2014 due to the new focus on public electricity and heat production, such as solar, the wind and hydro energy.
