Elder abuse is the mistreatment or maltreatment of the elderly, includes sexual, physical, psychological abuse, self-neglect, caregiver neglect and financial exploitation. Studies show that between 820,000 and over four million incidents of elder abuse occur every year (American Psychology Association, 2014). Studies have shown that abuse victims have an earlier mortality, then elders who are not abused victims (American Psychology Association, 2014). There are a variety of scams that target the elderly, home repair contractors, utility department employees, home health employees who have exploited vulnerable older individuals. Family members also abuse the elderly examples are decubitus ulcers, financial exploitation and malnutrition.
The Ground theory is better at determining what happens and provides a systematic approach. Ground theory for research would assist with the discovery of what problems exist in a s social setting and the process people use to handle them. The theory produces a thick description that acknowledges areas of conflict and contradiction. The theory adapts readily to studies of diverse phenomena. The theory can respond and change as condition that affects behavior change. The theory is clear on data collection and data analysis.
