Barker explains theory as “a group of related concepts and constructs based on facts and observations that attempt to explain a particular phenomenon” (2004). Elder abuse is a difficult construct that cannot be explained with one theory. Current literature suggests a variety of theoretical frameworks in the etiology of elder abuse therefore examining factors across several domains is needed to understand this concept. Within the United States, social learning theory and social exchange theory are widely used to explain elder abuse. The social justice systems model can also be applied to elder abuse because it examines the connection between individuals in a social justice environment. In response to elder abuse, culture influences how abuse is perceived and responded to. Victim’s willingness to accept help can be determined by culture because one’s culture can regulate who they may turn to in times of need or attention. In addition, culture further influences how families cope with stress ( ). Culture can also influence when it is appropriate to seek help from outsiders. It is important to understand the specific role seniors play in families and communities to increase professional effectiveness while working with this vulnerable population. Understanding expectations within families can help identify appropriate and acceptable services to recommend as well. Differences in culture should be considered because some ethnic groups view families as a collective opposed to separate individuals. The legal system does not acknowledge different cultural impressions regarding what is defined as abuse. Sometimes elder abuse becomes widespread because others fail to notice it. Some behavior is often ascribed as cultural or family habits when it is more likely to be learned
