I believe that the creating community in any sort of a group is an essential part of group progression. Members are an integral part of community. They are responsible for exercising proper group membership functions such as active listening and personal experience. Each member contributes to the overall tone and energy level of the group. This is what ultimately contributes to creating the group dynamic. These functions allow for the focus of the group to deepen as meaningful conversations occur. In contrast, a member that is not exercising these types of functions can hinder the group process and affect the purpose of group. Their first barrier could be that they are obligated to be there rather than their own choice. This immediately sets the member to be in a defensive mode towards the leader and possibly other members. Members who show resistance could display signs of hostility towards being present, refusal to cooperatively participate and body language signals disinterest. Resistance can also present a lack of commitment to the group, when commitment is low the member could engage other members in disruptive behaviors and engage others in off topic matters. The ability to recognize this would allow me to setup discussion between the resistant member and other members through the use of dyads or triads without “direct participation of the leader” (Jacobs et al., 2016, p.411). In contrast, the member may feel resistant to the group members and not the leader; in which case breaking off into dyads, placing myself as the member’s partner, would allow for better insight while still allowing other member to hold focus on the group’s purpose.
