Group Tested for Educational Use and Potential
For the experiment that tested one’s scholarly abilities, I made a control group where I had 7 people try to solve three riddles without any music at all. After I finished the control experiment, I had 13 more people begin solving their first riddle without music. I called this part of the experiment trial 1. Then, I had those people solve a riddle while I played some relaxing music near their ears. I called this part trial 2. Finally, I had the test subjects tell me what their favorite type of music was, which I played for them while they solved their third and final riddle. I called this part trial 3. In fact, the music that one enjoyed listening to seemed to distract them more as they increased the amount of fidgeting that they previously did not have before, such as biting nails, shaking their legs, and scrunching eyebrows while leaning forward to further assess the riddle multiple times over. Each subject indicated that they were significantly more stressed out because they were more focused on their favorite song rather than their concentration on the riddle.
For the relaxing music, results showed that people had an increased amount of concentration, shown through the fact that more people were able to complete the solving of their riddle while still listening intently to the tune. The extent of the fidgeting went only as far as leaning forward to re-read as well as some nail biting. However, the relaxing music seemed to be very effective in aiding the test subject’s concentration while also relaxing their tension of being “bad” at solving
