The experiment examined the efficiency of 10 test subject in memorising and reproducing a pattern of numbers, firstly in a grid of 6x6 boxes with the numbers 1-10 randomly ordered throughout.
There were two trials in the experiment. Two different sequences were used for each trial which was no music, rock music and Mozart for the trial 1 but for trial 2 it was rock music, no music and then symphony. During the experiment, each subject was seated and a blank identical test paper was given to them. A group member held a test paper in front of the subject for exactly 1 minute to memorize it and then they were given 1 minute to replicate the pattern of the numbers that they had just memorised on the blank grid identical test paper, …show more content…

Using different genres are better to identify which genres affect the subject’s abilities to memorise and recall number lists. Rock music was one of the chosen music that were used in the experiment because of its loudness and loud music is known to be distractive on the brain. It has good and bad effects on memory, Symphony was also one of the chosen music that were used in the experiment because it’s a soft music and it has mostly good effects on the memory by helping a person to relieve their stress and it basically helps a person to relax. A set of research results indicating that listening to Symphony music may induce a short-term improvement on the performance of certain kinds of mental tasks known as "spatial-temporal reasoning; Popularized versions of the hypothesis, which suggest that "listening to Symphony types of music makes you smarter", or that early childhood exposure to classical music has a beneficial effect on mental development;

Interestingly, while the findings of this study revealed that it is the intensity of the music rather than the type of music that matters the most when it comes to cognitive performance, it is still noteworthy to point out that scores were significantly higher when participants completed the tests in the no condition. Through this process, it can be implied that it is easier to process information in the presence of a minimal level of distraction. It can be implied that students should not listen to any music or allow any auditory disturbance while studying to obtain maximum performance
