I remember our last conversation we talked about how it seems as if it's hard to get students to connect with their learning experience. Although i’ve only read the first few chapters in this book it was filled with tons of valuable information.
Students are taught how to memorize, like shown in the quote. It is also shown that little time is spent practicing this, and students must figure out how to do so on their own.
Algorithms play a huge role in our lives, shaping decisions that impact individuals and societies at large. In Cathy O'Neil’s book "Weapons of Math Destruction," O’Neil highlights three important factors that define the potential destructiveness of an algorithm. These factors are opacity, scale, and damage. The way that math is taught differs in each of the four different types of schools, which correspond with social class and economic status. In the working-class schools, math is about following the correct steps and procedures. Students are penalized if they solve a problem in a different format than is instructed by the teacher. I’ve heard many people claim that math is just not for them but, they’re probably not trying hard enough. When you take a group of people and put them together to do math, some will exceed while others might feel like giving up. The only difference between the two groups is that the “advanced” group was prepared for the math they were presented with. When the whole group is presented with the final outcome of the skill the lower kids notice who was higher and instead of aspiring to be like them, they have set their minds that they will never reach their skill level. Then, they continue going through the whole school year telling themselves that they are not capable of success and that they will always be the same skill level as the way they started out.
Nonetheless, students should identify which few methods enhance their memory and understanding best when learning, as different students have different learning needs. Likewise, students, who are usually required to recall learning materials, are recommended to view future new materials with strong enthusiasm and determination (Shuilleabhain, 2014), as it is an approach to motivate students. However, students should take care not to practice learning techniques they are not familiar with, especially when nearing the exams; as students who, Lan (cited in Bednall and Kehoe, 2011, pp. 205-226) believes, “engage in unfamiliar strategies may induce a high working memory load, thereby diminishing the effectiveness of their study efforts.” Also, both teachers and parents alike should take the practical and relevant steps in ensuring that their students/children are well schooled in the manner of implementing effective learning techniques in their academic life.
