I’ve heard many people claim that math is just not for them but, they’re probably not trying hard enough. When you take a group of people and put them together to do math, some will exceed while others might feel like giving up. The only difference between the two groups is that the “advanced” group was prepared for the math they were presented with. When the whole group is presented with the final outcome of the skill the lower kids notice who was higher and instead of aspiring to be like them, they have set their minds that they will never reach their skill level. Then, they continue going through the whole school year telling themselves that they are not capable of success and that they will always be the same skill level as the way they started out. They have no motivation to keep going or get better so they stay the same or they get worse. Many people, including Miles Kimball and Noah Smith, professors, believe that everyone is good at math. At many schools, they just take a group of kids with different skill levels. Some parents might have been preparing them from a younger age. There is a possibility that their parents had pushed them to practice their math skills earlier on in their lives. Teacher will continue to pay more attention to the children who are advanced often leaving the lower kids behind. Obviously this does not help them to get smarter. They will never have enough motivation to keep going. The smarter kids will keep going and they will keep getting smarter. The kids with lower grades in math will continue to say that math is not for them and that the problems are just too hard for them. Negative thoughts will continue to flood their minds and they will never be able to get anything
