Arguments About The Existence Of Working Memory

Today many researchers use different cognitive theories to argue about the existence of working memory and how it is stored in the brain. According to many psychologists/researchers working memory is a system for functioning with current information before it is processed into long term memory. The purpose of this research is to explore that capacity and how much the mind can remember or recognize after a short period of time. Participants are presented with a series of stimuli and after a period of time are asked to recall what was just presented to them. From previous research it has been suggested that the capacity to hold information reaches its limits at seven plus or minus two items. From the previous studies it has been suggested how …show more content…

The participants were from different ethnicities included Caucasian, Vietnamese, German/Welsh, Mexican and Indian. The participants were asked individually in person to volunteer. No, volunteer received any kind of extra credit as it was not a class requirement. There were 4 males and 6 females participating in the experiment. Excel spreadsheet was used to collect final experiment results and responses from demographic questions for each of the participants.
Procedure:
In this experiment we studied the accuracy of the recalling capacity of the numbers in individuals. These include which condition was given and length of the numbers. Before the experiment took place informed consent was gathered from each of the participants. There was only one condition for the participants to experience either repeating a number in forward or in backward condition in response to the stimulus provided. It was made sure that the participants were unaware of the condition that they didn’t experience. The participants were assigned to the groups (forward or backward) randomly chosen (5 in each group) by flipping the coins on google. The conditions included the same short digit numbers created out of a series of 2 digits and all the way up to long digits which were created out of a series of 9 digits, all in which used the digits from 0-9. For each condition level the stimulus remained the same i.e, the stimulus was presented for a fixed period of time before collecting the response, stimulus was provided once to all participants in both condition, and then were given 30 seconds to recognize and recall the numbers. After the results were recorded on a given piece of paper the participants were told their results and thanked for their
