Grit is a belief within yourself that you can conquer anything, if you stick with it. Angela Duckworth defines grit as sticking with things over the very long term until you master them. According to Duckworth, people with grit are “distinguished by their propensity to maintain effort and interest over years despite failure, adversity, and plateaus in progress” (2013 pg 27). In other words, Duckworth explains that to be gritty means to maintain your level of effort and interest over a period of time no matter if you fail or no matter how hard it may be. There are two types of mindsets, a fixed mindset and a growth mindset. According to Dweck, people with a fixed mindset believe that they either are or are not good at something based on their natural born nature because it’s just who they are. However, people with growth mindset believe that basic qualities can be cultivated through effort (Dweck, 52). In a fixed mindset, people stick to what they know in order to avoid failure and boost their confidence whereas people with a growth mindset seek out new opportunities and challenge themselves to grow. A growth mindset creates motivation whereas a fixed mindset leads to sameness. Based on Dweck’s definition of growth mindset, finding new ways to be better and improve oneself is possible. With a growth mindset comes the belief that anyone can be good at anything because ability is tied to action and skills come from practice. Brabantio has grit as well, especially when it comes to his daughter, Desdemona. Brabantio doesn’t like Othello because he is black. Brabantio is also questioning if his daughter is even capable of falling in love with a black man. He feels as though Othello has tricked her into marrying him. In order to proclaim her love for Othello, Desdemona appeared in court to let everyone know that she truly loves him. Brabantio has grit because he was determined to make sure his daughter wasn’t unwillingly in a relationship. He was determined to protect his daughter even though it wasn’t from the right things. At this point, Brabantio’s level of success was to make sure his daughter was okay and he had enough grit
