Having growth mindset and grit are very important for a person to have if they want to be successful in life. When a person has growth mindset, it means that if they fail at something they won’t make excuses for it or put themselves down for it. Instead they see what they did wrong and work on it until they achieve it. Having grit is when you never give up. According to Angela Duckworth, from the excerpt “Angela Duckworth and the Research on ‘Grit’”, people who are in college that don’t graduate on time, but still continue to try in college, have grit. It helps you see obstacles as a challenge, and instead of running away from them, you go after them head on and don’t stop until you win. According to researchers, from the article “True Grit”, Angela Lee Duckworth and Lauren Eskreis- Winkler state, “Gritty individuals are tortoise-like, distinguished by their propensity to maintain ‘effort and interest over years despite failure, adversity, and plateaus in progress’.” In other words, Duckworth and Winkler believe that when you have grit, you don’t pay attention to the people that say you can’t do it. You go after what you want and stick with it, no matter how long it takes. A moment in my life where I had grit was when I was in the 8th grade. I was not good in math and was failing. To change that I tried going to after school, I got tutoring, and I even studied before I had any tests. But I still didn’t do so well. So what I did was I continued to study and get tutoring and I did not give up. During the last marking period my grades started to go up, and I passed my math class with an 85 percent. Unlike a fixed mindset, growth mindset lets you have a positive outlook on life. Instead of blaming others you see what you can do to make the situation better the next time. According to the article “Mindset” by Carol Dweck she states, “Even in the growth mindset, failure can be a painful experience. But it doesn’t define you. It’s a problem to be faced, dealt with, and learned from.” Therefore, Dweck explains that when a person is dealt with a problem, like a C+ as their current grade in school, they see what they could do to better it. Whether it is by studying, or even changing your routine, you will try to make that situation turn around and learn from your mistakes. An event in my life where I used a growth mindset was when I failed my second semester of algebra when I was a freshman in High School. Everybody in the class who failed was blaming the teacher and felt like they should just give up on Algebra all together. Of course I was upset but instead of moping around I did something about it. When I got algebra again for my sophomore year I got a tutor and did all my homework and payed attention during class. This resulted in me getting an 85 percent ass my overall grade and me passing my regents with an 83 percent. Instead of being like everybody else in the class and putting my self down, I saw what I was struggling in and fixed it. I wanted to pass, so I focused on that and got what I worked for. That is
