1. In the beginning of the chapter, there was an explosion that occurred. It seems as if there was a battle occurring from afar, but the boys weren’t able to see. I concluded that maybe there was a battle occurring from afar because in the novel, it states “…but there were other lights in the sky, that moved fast, winked, or went out, though not even a faint popping came down from the battle fought at ten miles’ height. But a sign came down from the world of grownups, though at the time there was no child awake to read it. There was a sudden bright explosion and corkscrew trail across the sky.” The excerpt describes the sight of the battle that is taking place in the sky and how there was a sign from the grownups that the kids had been waiting for. 2. The different boys react to Samneric’s story of the beast by preparing for the beast by collecting all their weapons such as spears. All the boys became frightened by their discovery and began to prep and plan. In chapter 6, it states, “The circle of boys shrank away in horror…The bright morning was full of threats and the circle began to change. What motivates the boys to visit the Castle Rock at the end of the island because that’s the area when Jack has never explored throughout their whole time being there so that might have meant that the “beast” lives there. The evidence I cited to support my claim was “‘Now think, Jack. Is there anywhere on the island you haven’t been?’ Unwillingly Jack answered. ‘There’s only – but of course! You remember? The tail-end part, where the rocks are all piled up. I’ve been near there…’ ‘And the thing might live there.’ All the assembly talked at once. “Quite! All right. That’s where we’ll look. If the beast isn’t there we’ll go up the mountain and look, and light the fire’.” The excerpt shows that Ralph decided to have the boys go there only because it’s a region where nobody
