Dr. Hare proves that a mentally ill person has little to no emotion through crimes or thoughts they commit. Almost as a computer may act. This makes the person able to commit unbelieve crimes. This compares to the article, “A Revised Portrait of a Psychopath” by Peter Reuell. The article articulates the mindset of the mentally ill and does a case study on it.
In the scholarly journal written by Vujosevic (2015) he provides a framework to answer the question as to whether psychopaths have a conscience that is dysfunctional. He states, “according to my account, this means that their reflective capacity for moral self-assessment, which triggers self evaluative emotions, is significantly impaired”(Vujosevic, 2015, p. 2). In both authors’ writings it discusses psychopaths and their inability to feel guilt after committing crimes. This lack of remorse is what leads to repeat offenses, which can sometimes lead into serial killers, such as Dahmer. All individuals are born into different circumstances, therefore experiencing varying teachings of moral and ethic ground roots, biological differences impacting
Jon Ronson explores in his book, The Psychopath Test, the true “scam” behind The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III) and American pharmaceuticals industries. He begins with an anxious theme and expands by showing that as one is anxious he or she learns more about something and can maybe find a deeper meaning. This example is what Ronson did when he accepted Talmi’s offer to see and help her with the book. As Ronson moves through the book he develops his idea at a rapid pace.
A psychopath is classified as someone who shows no remorse and has no conscience, while a sociopath has some sort of conscience and sometimes shows some guilt or remorse ("What's the Difference Between a Sociopath and a Psychopath"). Psychopaths do not feel sorry for other people (“What’s the Difference Between a Sociopath and a Psychopath”) and Kuklinski certainly did not feel sorry for any of his victims (“Married to The Iceman”). During an interview with HBO, Kuklinski stated that he probably could have killed his father and wouldn’t have felt bad about it ("Richard Kuklinski The Iceman Mafia Hitman HBO Interview 2001 (Part 1)"). Richard Kuklinski also showed sociopathic traits. He only showed remorse when talking about his wife and kids ("Richard Kuklinski 'The Iceman' Part 12 of 12").
People often associate murder with psychopaths and sociopaths, whom out of malice and corruption, brutally torture their victims to death. While this cliché is over portrayed in fictional thriller stories, it is not the case for all murders. Most criminals have reasons. Occasionally, the criminal defendant is found to have been innocent by reason of insanity. There are multiple branches of morality to consider before deeming one accountable for their own actions.
Born on May 16, 1861, H.H. Holmes’s real name was Herman W. Mudgett, and he originated from Gilmanton, New Hampshire. In his early childhood, he was eager to learn about everything he could. He was even considered a child prodigy, and had a fascination with anatomy. However, his childhood got the best of him and growing up with a father who was an alcoholic, and being bullied by other kids at school seemed to have changed his behavior, attitude, and look on life, and he became a bitter person.
Traits of psychopaths: Superficial charm, pathological lying, lack of remorse or guilt, impulsivity, unrealistic goals, early behavioral problems, a feeling of being above the law. One psychopath that sticks out in U.S history is H.H Holmes. If you have ever heard of the “Murder Castle” then you know of him. Dr. H.H. Holmes is considered America's first serial killer. The number of victims is estimated to be 27, and later discoveries of corpses revealed as many as 200.
Psychopathy meant an individual was socially a predator who used his charm to manipulate people and live life according to their desires, harming others and never feeling remorse. Since these traits best describe Bundy, who lacked conscience and violated all laws and regulations of the community without regret, he was a psychopath. Notably, Ted Bundy's actions were coercive and unwanted, constituting sexual violence. As an individual with antisocial personality disorder, Bundy got satisfaction each time he raped and killed his victims. With Cleckley's analysis, Widiger considers Bundy to have sadism, which best describes his sexual violence behaviour.
The documentary H. H. Holmes: America’s First Serial Killer follows the life of the brilliantly sadistic criminal mastermind, Herman Webster Mudgett, notoriously known under his alias, Henry Howard Holmes. Through his manipulative tactics, expertise in chemistry and anatomy, and meticulously devised creations, America would encounter one of its most monstrous and depraved beings to ever taint the nation with horror. Like many serial killers, H. H. Holmes had a traumatic childhood of receiving abuse from his parents and peers. With both of his parents being devout Methodists, a Protestant Christianity denomination, he had a profound religious upbringing, which appears paradoxical to his fascination with death as an adult.
There have been many cases where criminals, murderers in particular who have been diagnosed with ASPD. A majority of
Have you ever wondered, What was that person thinking? What caused this person to do such horrific things? How did he carry out these things and Why did he continue to carry them out? These are some of the questions someone would probably think about asking about H.H. Holmes, America's First Serial Killer. These questions to me into a deep research to get inside the wild and insane mind of America’s First Serial Killer,Dr. H.H. Holmes.
In the American society, things are more often than not exaggerated to make things more interesting; leave us ignorant with fantasy of crime, horror, romance, action, and adventure. Psychopaths and sociopaths are often confused with each other, and people believe that the two aren’t any different. In the entertainment business, psychopaths and sociopaths are made out to seem ruthless, violent murderers, rapists and more. While they can be all of these things, the media and entertainment business makes things seem different than they really are. According to definition, a sociopath is a person who lacks empathy, but a psychopath is one that has a complete lack of it.
Denise Mann dictated that “Psychopaths have low autonomic arousal. They don’t react and don’t show a lot of affection or emotion” (Mann 7). The narrator showed the many signs of low autonomic arousal such as motive for murder, no emotions, and he was cold and callous. Subject A exclaimed crazily “How then, am I mad? Hearken!
Psychopath and sociopath are two terms classified as antisocial personality disorders in the world of psychology. Although many people have heard of these two terms, quite often people do not know what sets them apart from one another. A sociopath is defined as a person with a personality disorder manifesting itself in extreme antisocial attitudes and behavior and a lack of conscience. The definition of psychopath is similar in being a person suffering from chronic mental disorder with abnormal or violent social behavior. By looking at the definitions, these personality disorders appear very similar; however, there are specific attributes that are more specific to one of the two.
Serial homicide is among the less common, but most heinous crimes an individual can commit. The vicious act of murder is unfathomable to most human beings, but research is not lacking in the attempt to provide an explanation. Criminological research is notorious for integrating theoretical perspectives to create an overarching explanation for different crimes. This paper will attempt to provide some insight to the crime of serial homicide. The difference between homicide and murder as outlined in the Criminal Code will be presented.
