Traits of psychopaths: Superficial charm, pathological lying, lack of remorse or guilt, impulsivity, unrealistic goals, early behavioral problems, a feeling of being above the law. One psychopath that sticks out in U.S history is H.H Holmes. If you have ever heard of the “Murder Castle” then you know of him. Dr. H.H. Holmes is considered America's first serial killer. The number of victims is estimated to be 27, and later discoveries of corpses revealed as many as 200. Holmes initially committed crimes such as fraud and forgery, but in 1893 he built a three story building he dubbed the "castle" as a hotel, drug store, and commercial store fronts for the Chicago World's Fair. Davies, murder was a business to Holmes. He turned it into a production line. We see this in the design of his “Castle.”. He had gas nozzles in the rooms along with peepholes to watch his guests’s demise. Holmes also had a laundry shoot type contraption to slide his victims down to the basement. He had all sorts of methods of murder such as a type of acid, a kiln, and his own weapons.
Dr. Davies says that his killing methods progressed in severity and intention. It started out motivated by money, but Holmes became more interested and involved. It was as if he convinced himself he was an entrepreneur not a serial killer.
Also as stated by Dr. Davies Holmes had turned the childhood bullying from a situation of fear to fascination, he was able to cope with his execution by adopting a fearless, even happy, mood. After Jack the Ripper had disappeared in London, Holmes appeared in Chicago. Despite having been caught and executed, there is a riveting theory that Holmes a very tactical surgeon and Jack the Ripper who would kill his victims by removing their internal organs, suggesting a fair amount of surgical training could possibly be the same man. The Ripper began his terrorism around the time when H.H. Holmes was never seen nor accounted for in the United States, and when Jack's killing ceased, was when Holmes's began. It can also be noted that their handwriting shares a 98% similarity, according to a computer program owned by the FBI. These parallels paired with their similar murder styles suggest that they could indeed be the same person.
