In HSTC 3415: Brewing Civilization, I have decided to do the Brewery Interview Project. This option will give me insight as to how craft breweries stand out in 2018 and the evolution of the craft beer market. Specifically, I would like to explore the divide between industrialized beer and microbreweries. Current society is shifting its focus from industrialized practices and products to local businesses. Craft beer and microbreweries are local drinking establishments which promote the “I Love Local” movement. This movement then created craft and microbreweries to emerge into communities across the Maritimes. My main focus is to see how craft breweries market themselves and try to stand out from the competition (industrialized beer) by experimenting. From the interview, I hope to gain insight into how the brewery of choice stands apart from industrial breweries. Stillwell has been mentioned in various headlines such as The Chronicle Herald as being “one of the country’s best beer bars” (Dewolf 2017). This brewery is located on Gottingen Street in Halifax, Nova Scotia and is new to brewing its own beer (Reynolds and Moran 79). The brewery supplies beer to their own bar and beer garden, which are both open in Halifax (Reynolds and Moran 79). Stillwell Brewing is owned and brewed by Christopher Reynolds (Reynolds and Moran 79). Rather than be distraught with competition, Propeller Brewing accepted Stillwell Brewing with open arms by sharing both equipment and space in hopes to build a community around craft beer (Reynolds and Moran 83). I will meet with the Dalhousie Gazette between February 17th and 25th to get assistance with addressing questions and improve my interviewing skills. I will be interviewing Reynolds at Stillwell between February 22nd to March 2nd. Attending the interview with me is Lauren
