Do you know who Desmond Doss is? Desmond Doss, a conscientious objector, was credited with saving 75 wounded soldiers during the bloodiest battles of World War II. This essay is over the movie Hacksaw Ridge written by Robert Schenkkan and Andrew Knight, directed by Mel Gibson. Its purpose is to inform people on the information that was presented in the movie are in correlation with the real events which happened between 1942 and 1946 in Guam and Okinawa during World War II. Hacksaw Ridge holds guts and glory throughout the movie that showed the trials and tribulations that Doss and his other comrades went through. Dorothy is a nurse that Doss meets when he takes an injured man to the hospital. Right before Doss is deployed, he proposes to Dorothy. Dorothy gives him a Bible with a piece of writing inside that she wrote. The writing stated, “If we do not meet another time on this earth, we have the assurance of a happy meeting place in Heaven. May God in His mercy grants us both a place there.” Doss carried this Bible around with him everywhere he went. When Doss came back from his tour, he was hospitalized for the next 6 years, causing Dorothy to raise their child by herself. The training camp where Doss was sent to was a major part of the setting in this movie. This is where Doss was tortured for being a conscientious objector. Doss was beaten in the barracks by fellow soldiers because of his beliefs of not carrying a gun. Doss’ Commanding Officer put him through multiple hardship in the time he was at Basic Training. Doss went through many trials until he was sent out to Okinawa to fight against the Japanese. Okinawa was a steep and jagged cliff that lead up to a plateau where thousands of heavily armed Japanese soldiers were waiting for the Americans. The Japanese often targeted medics, this meant that Doss was at a higher risk of getting injured. Americans wanted Okinawa for three reasons; 1. American bombers could reach the Japanese home islands from Okinawa, 2. Its seizure would serve the remaining southwest supply lines to resource-hungry Japan, and 3. Okinawa could be used as a support base for the scheduled November invasion of Japan proper. The Americans ended up making an advance on the Japanese after the Japanese leader committed suicide. These places that Doss went were all a part of World War II. The training camp lead up to the Okinawa battle. These are just a few of the things that the soldiers went through during the war.
